GM Punjabi
GM Punjabi & Co Ltd saw its initial stone laid by Gopaldas Punjabi in 1974, after the then-young entrepreneur moved to Mauritius from India in the mid 1950s. Originally dealing in textile that was procured and bought locally, Gopaldas opened his first aptly-named shop Bombay Store in Vacoas.
1980 was also the year in which Gopaldas’ sons, Padam and Pravin, joined hands in the business with bigger dreams in sight. While the focus at that point remained on Indian garments, the brothers began importing from India and wholesaling and retailing in the local Mauritian market.
Padam’s involvement in the business proved to be ingenious. Under his leadership, the company expanded onto a plethora of business activities: he imported sundry items and small household appliances from Indonesia, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. GM Punjabi & Co Ltd was blooming multilaterally and Padam created Mikachi as his own brand of small home appliances: from kettles to DVD players to microwaves and speakers.
Padam obtained the agency for Hisense Electronics in 2008, a multinational electronics manufacturer with its headquarters in China. Then a whole new ball game for Padam as he began competing with other top electronic brands such as Samsung and LG on the island. Hisense is one of the top five LED television manufacturers in the world.
Growing market demands prompted Padam to step into various business segments such as mobile, grooming and personal care. His recent expansions have also included smart phones, power tools and light construction equipment.
Committed to providing multilateral home solutions to its wide clientele, it also focuses on constantly innovating its range of electronics and hardware. The company’s wholesale network covers more than 600 clients. GM Punjabi strives for perfection and believes in offering high-quality products coupled with a personalized service, while also remaining an active and responsible member of the community.
